Barbera d'Alba DOC 'La Gemella', 2019, Viberti Giovanni, Piedmont

Lighter in body but loaded with favour, this bright and pretty Barbera punches well above it's weight and has that typical Italian flare to boot.

About this wine

Previously in the shadow of Nebbiolo, Barbera was locally referred to as the "wine of the poor" and trust us, after tasting this, you can call us whatever you want because this is delicious and it's here to stay.

We've known Claudio Viberti for a long time and over the years we've been fortunate enough to try many of the great wines that come out of his family vineyards in Piedmont. Introduced to us as a wine that was created for his Mother and Aunt (who were twin sisters) to serve in their restaurant, this is great example of the easy drinking reds to come out of the region. Not as complex or structured and far more approachable in its youth than Nebbiolo, the La Gemella is packed with red and black fruits with great concentration (which means those tasty flavours linger) and silky, smooth tannins. An awesome addition at your next dinner party or even just to enjoy on its own, La Gemella is flavoursome enough to enjoy with or without food.

What Makes It So Grape?

Produced in Piedmont, Italy

The Viberti winery was founded in the early 1900s, when Antonio Viberti purchased an inn in the Vergne district of Barolo, known as “Al Buon Padre”, along with an adjoining farm that produced the wine served in the trattoria.

At that time, Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes were the three varieties used by Antonio to produce his wines, which he sold exclusively in the restaurant. Today at Viberti Giovanni, Claudio, the youngest son, represents the third generation to run the family business. We've been friends with Claudio for many years and are always proud to share his delicious wines.
